Novels are written describing lots of characters and some events that drive the story forward, so that by the end a change happens whether with the situation or with the characters themselves.
When did novelists start writing novels with some illustrations?
It has been said that it all began in 1930s when an American artist and storyteller named Lynd Ward, used in his novels illustrations for youth and adult books. His wordless novels influenced the development of the graphic novel.
In the mean while in Europe, a comic album was created by a Belgian cartoonist George Remy, who wrote under the name of Herge’. It was first published on the 10th January 1929 in French.
While in 1920, Walt Disney who was an American animator and film producer working in film animation industry moved to California and was busy in creating cartoon films. In the 1920 he created Mickey Mouse. Soon afterwards with his brother Roy set up the Disney studio. The Disney World developed to include Comic books and Pictorial Novels and created many fairy tale stories and characters like Snow White, The three little pigs, The Sword in the Stone, Mary Poppins, One hundred and One Dalmatians and many others.
The so-called Golden Age of Comic Books was from the late 1930s till to 1950 in the U.S.A. and in Europe till mid 1960s. It was during that period when more fictional heroes appeared like Superman, Batman, Flash, Spiderman and many others.
Superman was first published in June 1938.
Still today most children as well as adults like to read illustrated stories, maybe they are more attracted by short strips or one frame Cartoon, and that is because of the busy time from which we are suffering.
Maybe we should help our children have a daily quite time reading, and what would be better than a comic book to help them get acquainted with reading.
