Cambridge Dictionary defines a hobby like this:
An activity that someone does for pleasure when they are not working.
The profession is described as:
Any type of work, especially one that needs a high level of education or a particular skill.
Let us think together about the differences between hobbies and professions, maybe we should see first, what is common between those two.
It seems to me obvious that a hobby is something we do alone without anybody asking for it, so it is not a duty or a specialty that we earn academically and hold a certificate from an educational institution, with successful graduation in it.
Does this mean that we are not interested to study or specialize in our hobby?
I think we should as much as possible if we really love that hobby. We can even turn our hobbies into professions at any age we find the opportunity in doing that.
Before going deeper into this subject, let us see the other side. How many people fail in their profession, even after graduation, because of character, circumstances, not sufficient education or maybe lack of modern study in the profession.
But what makes us stumble in our daily work, is it non-sufficient study or the non-love of the job?
Maybe we just pretended to like this profession, because somebody once told us: “You are going to be an engineer or a doctor or anything else, and that means we were conditioned to like that field. Maybe in our childhood, we received a Christmas gift as a present that was funny, attractive and full of discovery; maybe a box of Lego, which are small white plastic bricks, with red squared plastic roofs to build houses. Or a mechanic kit to build cars and tractors, anything “build it yourself”, maybe a small suing machine that drew our attention and made others and us be convinced that we are going to become a master dressmaker or any other profession. But deep inside we loved another thing, maybe math, science, or chemistry, even a different one of those little games. Sure enough, there is no puzzle maker profession!
The truth that we love everything that is presented to us, does not exclude loving more than one job or having more than one hobby. For instance: I love writing stories and I love electronics, drawing cartoons and guitar playing.
Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), used to be an artist in Painting and sculpture, as well as a scientist in optics, hydraulics, and anatomy.
Some of his famous paintings are La Gioconda known as Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, Virgin and Child with Saint Anne, The Virgin of the Rocks, and many other artworks.
Conclusion: Don’t miss to study and learn more about your hobby, because it is something you appreciate, and don’t forget to love the work you’re doing as a job, and make it a skillful beloved profession.
